Over 65% of App Store downloads originate from search. Yet most app teams invest more hours optimizing ad creative than they spend on the listing that converts the majority of their organic traffic. That gap โ€” between what drives installs and where effort concentrates โ€” is the core inefficiency in mobile growth today.

The App Store and Google Play ranking systems evaluate apps constantly. Metadata changes, competitor updates, download velocity shifts, and conversion rate fluctuations feed into algorithmic recalculations that happen without warning. An app ranking #4 for a high-intent keyword can drop to #18 in three days if a competitor publishes a stronger wiki:app-title and ships better screenshots while you wait two weeks to "see how things settle."

This is not SEO adapted for apps. The mechanics are fundamentally different. On the web, you can update a page instantly, test copy variations live, and iterate based on immediate feedback. In the App Store, every wiki:metadata-optimization change requires a full app submission. In Google Play, your full description indexes for search, but iOS ignores it entirely for ranking purposes. Running one shared metadata strategy across both platforms leaves traffic on the table in whichever store you optimized second.

What actually moves rankings

The algorithm evaluates two layers in parallel: relevance and quality. Relevance is the metadata side โ€” your app title, subtitle, keyword field on iOS, and short plus full descriptions on Android. The keyword field on iOS is 100 characters, no spaces, commas only. Repeating terms already present in your title or subtitle wastes allocation. Apple's algorithm combines tokens across title, subtitle, and keyword field to construct a searchable phrase index. If your title contains "Fitness" and your keyword field contains "tracker,women,home," the system can surface your app for "fitness tracker for women at home" even though that exact phrase appears nowhere as a string. Most teams do not understand this combinatorial mechanic and fill the keyword field with redundant terms that contribute zero new indexing.

On Google Play, there is no hidden keyword field. The system indexes your app name (50 characters), short description (80 characters), and the full description (up to 4,000 characters). Keyword placement and density matter. Your primary keyword belongs in the first sentence of the short description. In the long description, the strongest pattern: primary keyword in the opening paragraph, then distributed 2-3 more times through the body, never consecutively, always in context. Keyword stuffing triggers penalties identical to those in web search.

Machine learning analysis of ASO iterations reveals that on Google Play, the short description outperforms the title for functional keyword ranking. Iterations where a keyword appeared in the short description after an update showed 84.2% improvement rates, compared to 15.8% for keywords placed only in the title. Conversion rate is a ranking signal

Apple does not index your iOS app description for search. That fact leads most teams to treat it as filler copy. The description does not rank you directly, but it converts the users who find you, and that conversion rate feeds directly back into rankings. Average App Store conversion from search sits around 3-5%. Moving from 3% to 5% on a keyword driving 10,000 monthly impressions means 200 extra installs with zero additional spend. Those 200 installs signal stronger relevance to the algorithm, rankings improve, impressions increase, and the loop compounds.

The first three lines of your app description carry almost all the weight. Industry data suggests fewer than 2% of App Store visitors tap "more" to expand the full description. On a keyword driving volume in Germany or Japan, that conversion lift feeds directly into regional ranking. Each of the 40+ available App Store locales is an independent keyword opportunity. Most apps actively optimize three of them. That gap is unclaimed organic traffic sitting in plain sight.

Ratings, reviews, and the quality threshold

Ratings above 4.0 correlate with measurably better rankings. The algorithm does not read individual ratings and reviews for sentiment in real time, but aggregate rating and review velocity act as proxies for app quality. A rating drop from 4.5 to 3.8 can hurt ranking even when metadata stays unchanged, because users trust the listing less and conversion rate falls. The algorithm observes that decline and adjusts visibility downward.

Review response rate and sentiment trends matter beyond customer support. A spike in one-star reviews mentioning the same bug signals product instability. It is about treating metadata as a live system, localizing aggressively, monitoring keyword ranking and conversion signals daily, and updating strategically rather than reactively. The apps winning organic visibility are the ones that stopped treating ASO as a launch checklist and started running it as an engineering discipline.
