App Store Optimization solves two distinct problems that are easy to confuse. The first is visibility: making store algorithms understand which queries should surface your app. That is the domain of metadata—title, subtitle, keywords, description. The second is conversion: convincing a user who lands on your page to install, typically within five to ten seconds. That is the work of icon, screenshots, video, and rating.

Both depend on each other. Strong rankings without conversion mean traffic that never turns into installs. A great product page without visibility is a quality listing no one sees. The gap between doing ASO adequately and doing it well is wider than most teams realize, and the cost of that gap compounds over time.

What Changed in 2025 and Early 2026

Several platform-level shifts redefined how ASO functions. Apple introduced wiki:custom-product-pages keyword linking in July 2025, allowing CPPs to appear in organic search results rather than only paid campaigns. The limit expanded from 35 to 70 custom pages per app. This fundamentally changed the role of CPPs: previously a paid traffic tool, now a full part of organic strategy. ASA allows testing hypotheses in days that would take weeks to validate organically. Launch a campaign with exact match on specific keywords and observe tap-through rate (TTR) and conversion rate. Keywords with high TTR indicate the icon and title work for that query. Keywords with high conversion confirm the page meets user expectations. Keywords with high TTR but low conversion reveal a mismatch between what the query promises and what the page delivers.

Installs from paid campaigns increase overall install velocity, which supports organic positions—especially at launch or after metadata updates. High TTR on a keyword signals to the algorithm that the app is relevant to that query, which can positively affect organic indexing over time. Organic uplift is measurable: the gap between organic install growth and campaign activity, tracked through mobile measurement partners.

But with multiple ad slots now live in search results, cannibalization risk is real. If an app ranks organically in the top 1–3 for a query, paying aggressively for that same keyword may simply replace organic clicks rather than add new users. Monitor organic positions and paid activity for the same keywords together, not separately.

Retention, Engagement, and Algorithmic Ranking

This is a shift many teams have not accounted for in their strategy, and they are losing organic traffic where they least expect it. Google made engagement the center of its 2025 strategy. The You tab surfaces content from installed apps. Collections delivers personalized recommendations on the Android home screen. The Level Up program for games gives additional store visibility to apps that hit engagement benchmarks.

In practice, this means acquisition and retention can no longer be optimized separately. In-App Events on iOS and promotional content on Google Play simultaneously attract new users and bring back those who left. Organic performance and retention now directly affect each other. If users leave quickly, the algorithm notices.

Common Mistakes That Still Persist

Blaming the algorithm is usually a way of not doing the work. When downloads drop, the first place many teams look is the algorithm. Most of the time that is not what is happening. The more useful response is to treat it as a diagnostic problem. Split the data by country, by traffic source, by channel, and figure out where the drop is coming from before drawing conclusions. If browse traffic fell, maybe a placement was lost. If conversion dropped, that is a different kind of problem and needs a different response.

Treating ASO and SEO as roughly the same discipline narrows what people think the job involves. In SEO, traffic is the main metric. In ASO, a download is what matters, and the relationship between impressions and downloads is more loaded. High traffic without conversion can signal to the algorithm that the keyword was not a good match for the app. High impressions without installs can make things worse, not better.

Ranking for more keywords is easy to show and hard to justify. If the keywords have low traffic and conversion through them is thin, the number is just a number. It demonstrates activity more than results. A more grounded way to track keyword performance is to look at impressions alongside installs and conversion rate. When changing a keyword set, impressions should go up. Conversion should not fall at the same time. If both move in the right direction, the change was probably worth making.

Running creative tests without a clear hypothesis is common, particularly on teams newer to ASO. Testing whether showing a new feature in the first few screenshots improves conversion is a testable idea with a clear output. Testing whether the screenshots look nicer is not. Before running a test, know what specifically you are trying to learn, what a good result looks like, and what you would do with a negative result. Test results from App Store and Play Store are not perfectly reliable. Checking performance with two weeks of real data after rollout gives a more honest picture.

ASO as a Continuous Loop, Not a Project

Many apps get a reasonable amount of ASO work done around launch, and then it sits mostly untouched until there is a major release or something goes wrong. The metadata stays the same, screenshots age out, keyword performance drifts without anyone noticing. The app is still there and still ranking for something, but the gap between where it is and where it could be tends to grow quietly.

If you are not running tests and updating things, someone else in the category probably is. Positions in the store are not permanent, and they do not default to whoever got there first. The teams that treat ASO as something that runs continuously tend to be in a better position than the ones that treat it as a project with an end date. The word "optimization" is sitting right there in the name.
