The Measurement Gap Finally Closes
For years, app-store-connect Analytics gave developers a partial view of their app's performance โ download counts, impressions, conversion rates โ but critical business metrics lived elsewhere. Understanding how different user cohorts performed over time required stitching together data from multiple systems. Comparing monetization performance against category peers meant relying on third-party estimates. Tracking subscription retention curves required custom data pipelines.
On March 24, 2026, that fragmentation ended. Apple shipped what it describes as the biggest Analytics update since the platform's inception, introducing more than 100 new metrics, rebuilt cohort capabilities, and peer group benchmarking โ all natively integrated into App Store Connect.
What Changed and Why It Matters
The update spans four major areas, each addressing a longstanding blind spot in the developer measurement stack.
Monetization and subscription visibility now includes In-App Purchase performance tracking, offer effectiveness analysis, subscription retention curves, and churn breakdowns. Previously, getting a complete view of monetization required exporting transaction data and building custom reports. Now, proceeds per download, download-to-paid conversion, and cohort-level revenue trends surface directly in the Analytics dashboard.
Cohort analysis tools let developers segment users by shared attributes โ download date, traffic source, geographic region, offer start date โ and track those groups' behavior over time. This is not demographic clustering; it is time-based performance comparison. Teams launching in a new market can now compare how long users from that region take to convert versus users from established regions. Apps testing new onboarding flows can isolate cohorts by download week and measure retention differences without custom instrumentation.
Peer group benchmarks introduce two monetization-specific comparisons: download-to-paid conversion rate and proceeds per download. Both benchmarks draw from anonymized, category-specific data across the App Store catalog, protected by differential privacy. For the first time, developers can answer "are we underperforming on monetization relative to similar apps?" without relying on third-party panel data.
Enhanced filtering and export capabilities allow up to seven simultaneous filters on any metric view, plus programmatic export of subscription reports via the Analytics Reports API. This makes it practical to drill into highly specific segments โ "users who downloaded from a Product Page Optimization experiment in Japan during Q1 2026 and started a subscription within seven days" โ without hitting filter limits or needing to download raw data.
Privacy Thresholds and Data Coverage
Before drawing conclusions from the new metrics, understanding what the data includes โ and excludes โ is critical.
Engagement metrics reflect opt-in data only. Active device counts and session metrics include only users who agreed to share diagnostics and usage information. This is not a bug; it is a privacy design decision. Engagement figures represent an opted-in subset of the actual install base, not total usage.
Source attribution requires minimum thresholds. Certain acquisition sources, app referrers, web referrers, and campaign links will not appear in Analytics until they cross a privacy threshold. If a specific source is missing, it may be below the threshold rather than absent entirely. These protections apply across all Analytics views, including subscription and cohort breakdowns.
Peer group benchmarks use differential privacy. Benchmark values are generated using differential privacy techniques to ensure no individual app's performance within a peer group can be reverse-engineered. This means benchmark figures represent statistically accurate trends but are not precise point estimates.
These are not limitations to work around โ they are intentional boundaries. Teams building measurement strategies around the new Analytics capabilities should factor in these privacy-preserving structures from the start.
Insights: Apple's Answer to Flexible Campaign Reporting
In parallel with the Analytics expansion, Apple updated its Ads platform with Insights, a new reporting workspace designed for performance analysis across campaign groups, placements, keywords, and geographies.
Insights replaces the older Custom Report Builder with a more flexible architecture. The platform offers two report types: Performance reports covering standard account views (Campaign Groups, Campaigns, Ad Groups, Keywords, Search Terms, Placements, Countries), and Advanced reports showing aggregate competitive data like Impression Share and Rank.
The key workflow improvement is editing flexibility. While predefined reports come pre-configured with common metrics and dimensions, most can be edited โ change the date range, add filters, swap metrics โ and saved as custom views. Impression Share reports have tighter restrictions (fixed timezone settings on certain report types, 12-week maximum date range), but standard Performance reports support up to 24 months of data.
Reports are shared at the campaign group level, not to individuals. Anyone with access to the campaign group automatically gains access to shared reports. This makes cross-functional visibility straightforward but requires careful permission management โ deleting a report removes access for everyone.
The Measurement Stack Is Converging
Taken together, the Analytics expansion and Insights rollout represent a structural shift in how Apple expects developers to measure app performance. The platform is moving away from a model where critical business metrics live in disconnected systems โ MMPs for attribution, BI tools for cohorts, third-party benchmarks for competitive context โ toward a unified measurement environment where acquisition, engagement, and monetization data converge in one place.
This does not eliminate the need for external measurement tools. Mobile Measurement Partners still own cross-platform attribution, deep event tracking, and fraud detection. But for teams operating primarily on iOS, the gap between what Apple provides natively and what requires third-party instrumentation has narrowed significantly.
The immediate action for most teams is straightforward: audit what you are currently measuring in external systems that now surfaces natively in Analytics. If you are exporting transaction data to calculate cohort retention curves, check whether the built-in subscription retention reports meet your needs. If you are paying for category benchmarking from a third-party service, compare the data quality and coverage against the new peer group benchmarks. If you are running manual reports to track offer performance, test whether the new monetization views eliminate that workflow.
The update does not force a migration, but it creates an opportunity to simplify the measurement stack โ and for many teams, that simplification will be the largest ROI from this release.
