The difference matters for prioritization. We regularly encounter teams spending days iterating icon designs while their semantic coverage sits at 40% of addressable search volume. The Three Text Fields That Control Visibility

Keyword field is invisible to users but indexed by the platform. The mistake: repeating keywords already in title or subtitle. Repetition does not compound weight. This is 100 characters for new semantic coverage, not reinforcement of existing terms. Separators do not matter for indexing (commas optional), but spaces count against the character limit. "yoga,meditation,sleep" is more efficient than "yoga, meditation, sleep".
Google Play operates differently. It indexes the full description โ up to 4,000 characters โ making it a content task rather than purely conversion copy. Keywords should appear naturally throughout the text, roughly one exact match per 250 characters. The short description (80 characters) also indexes and displays in search, functioning similarly to iOS subtitle.
Behavioral Signals Outweigh Metadata
Rating threshold effects are clear in the data. Apps below 3.5 stars receive measurably less visibility. Above 4.0, positions improve. Above 4.5, the algorithm treats it as a sustained quality signal. Apple does not publish the formula, but the correlation between rating and search visibility holds across categories.
Crucially, the algorithm weights recent ratings more heavily than historical averages. An app that maintained 3.8 for twelve months but now consistently receives 4.7 will outrank an app sitting stable at 4.5. Fresh user perception matters more than legacy reputation.
App Store indexes review text. If users repeatedly mention specific features or terms in reviews, the app gains relevance for those queries. Review management is not just reputation work โ it is part of semantic footprint.
Retention has become a first-class ranking input. We are seeing apps with modest install volumes but strong D1/D7 retention outrank competitors with 10x the download velocity but poor engagement. The platform has become hostile to burst-install tactics that do not translate to product usage.
Update frequency signals active development. Analysis of top-1000 apps shows 74% ship updates at least monthly. Apps that go three-plus months without updates tend to slide in rankings even when other factors remain constant. The algorithm interprets stagnation as abandonment.

Video previews remain underutilized. Apps with preview video see measurably higher conversion on average, yet adoption sits below 40% even in competitive categories. Video that shows actual product interaction in the first three seconds outperforms brand montages.
Localization Is Revenue, Not Translation
Sixty-five percent of App Store revenue originates from non-English markets, yet localization remains the most neglected high-ROI lever. The gap: teams translate text but do not localize search behavior.
