Definition
Search Volume in ASO context is the estimated number of times users search for a specific keyword within an app store over a given period (typically monthly). Unlike web SEO where Google provides explicit search volume data, app store search volume is always estimated — neither Apple nor Google publishes official search volume numbers. This makes all search volume data inherently approximate and best used for relative comparison rather than absolute measurement.
How It Works
No official source:
Neither Apple nor Google discloses actual search volume numbers. All search volume data in ASO comes from third-party estimates.
Apple Search Ads Popularity (SAP) Score:
The closest proxy to official search volume data on iOS:
- Apple provides a "Popularity" score in Apple Search Ads (Search Ads Advanced)
- Originally displayed as 1-5 dots; tools convert to a 5-100 numerical scale
- Score reflects relative search frequency — higher = more searches
- NOT a direct count — it's a relative index, not "10,000 searches per month"
- Minimum viable score: ~20 (below this, traffic is negligible)
- The scale is exponential, not linear — a keyword with SAP 80 has dramatically more traffic than SAP 40 (not just 2x)
September 2025 SAP recalibration:
A major event in ASO: SAP scores dropped 77.4% across the board (from 165,875 keywords above Popularity 5 to just 39,254). This was an algorithmic rebuild of the popularity scoring system. Historical data pre-September 2025 is not directly comparable to current scores.
Google Play estimation methods:
- No equivalent of SAP — no official relative score
- Third-party tools estimate Google Play search volume through:
- Install pattern analysis
- Ranking position data
- Competitor intelligence
- Ad impression data from Google Ads
Tool estimates:
| Tool | Method | Reliability |
|---|---|---|
| AppTweak | Proprietary algorithm using SAP + install data | Medium-High |
| Sensor Tower | Multi-signal estimation | Medium-High |
| MobileAction | SAP-based + competitive data | Medium |
| data.ai | Enterprise-level market intelligence | Medium-High |
Best Practices
- Use for relative comparison, not absolutes — "keyword A has higher volume than keyword B" is reliable. "Keyword A has exactly 50,000 monthly searches" is not.
- Cross-check with 2+ tools — different tools use different methods. Consensus across tools increases confidence.
- Set minimum thresholds — keywords below SAP ~20 (Apple) are unlikely to drive meaningful traffic. Don't waste metadata space.
- Understand the exponential scale — SAP scores are not linear. A keyword at SAP 80 may have 10-50x the traffic of SAP 40.
- Refresh data regularly — search volumes shift seasonally and with trends. Monthly or quarterly refreshes prevent stale decisions.
- Account for the Sep 2025 SAP reset — if comparing historical data, note that pre-Sep-2025 SAP scores are on a different scale.
