Definition

Keyword Ranking is the specific position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) at which an app appears in search results for a particular keyword. Each keyword has its own independent ranking — an app typically tracks 50-200+ keywords simultaneously. Keyword Rankings are the most granular and actionable metric in App Store Optimization (ASO) — they directly determine Search Visibility and Organic Installs volume.

How It Works

Tracking:

  • Keyword rankings are tracked daily using ASO tools (AppTweak, Sensor Tower, MobileAction, etc.)
  • Rankings are country-specific — the same keyword may have different rankings in the US, UK, Japan, etc.
  • Rankings fluctuate throughout the day (especially top positions)
  • Tools typically report rankings from a daily snapshot

  • Algorithm updates: can cause sudden shifts across many keywords simultaneously
  • Seasonal keywords: natural ranking shifts with demand cycles

Best Practices

  1. Track keywords in tiers — focus effort on "striking distance" keywords (positions 11-20) where small improvements yield significant traffic gains.
  1. Set ranking alerts — configure ASO tools to alert when core keywords drop >3 positions. Early detection enables faster response.
  1. Track competitor rankings alongside yours — understanding whether your drop is caused by your own changes or competitor improvements determines the correct response.
  1. Don't over-react to daily fluctuations — 1-2 position shifts are normal noise. Focus on weekly trends.
  1. Measure ranking-to-install correlation — link keyword ranking changes to actual install changes to understand which keywords drive the most value.
